Twinsburg’s Wilcox Elementary School’s Preschool Program Gets a Make-Over
The Twinsburg Board of Education recently accepted a proposal to revamp the Wilcox preschool program. Preschool policy and rules are governed by Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-11: Preschool Children Eligible for Special Education. The Twinsburg City School District is committed to ensure a continuum of placements options are available to meet the needs of children with disabilities for special education and related services Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is the legal requirement that children with disabilities be educated in the same environment as children without disabilities whenever possible. Children with disabilities should only be removed from a regular educational environment if the nature of their disability or services makes it so their needs cannot be adequately addressed in the general education environment. In considering appropriate placement options consistent with the requirement to service students in the least restrictive environment, the IEP teams need to consider the following options ranging from least restrictive to most restrictive environments:
A public school preschool general education class or a non-public school preschool program in which no more than eight children with disabilities are enrolled,
A regular early childhood education setting in which fifty per cent or fewer of the students are children with disabilities,
A public school preschool integrated class in which fifty per cent or fewer of the students are children with disabilities,
A public school preschool special education class in which more than fifty per cent of the students are children with disabilities,
A special school, and
A home or service provider location.
As a result, the Wilcox preschool program has rebranded from the Integrated Preschool Program (IPP) and Kindergarten Preparatory Program (KPP) to The Wilcox Early Learning Center. Under the umbrella of Wilcox Early Learning Center students have various classroom opportunities depending on interest and need:
In addition to the classrooms, the Wilcox Early Learning Center will house a special education licensed teacher who is able to provide itinerant services in the general education classroom both at Wilcox and within the community preschools within the Twinsburg City School District.
All classrooms will use the same curriculum, assessments, report cards, and technology. If you are currently enrolled in the Wilcox Early Learning Center someone from the school may be reaching out to discuss classroom placement options for the 2024-2025 school year.
