Booster Minutes                                                                             Monday, February 26, 2018

Meeting called to order by Jack Rapkin at 6:04pm

Meeting Minutes:

Secretary’s Report:  Meeting minutes from January 22nd were sent via email to the Band Booster Board and attendees by Cassandra Blyler. Correction submitted by Karen Wilson, minutes updated. No further corrections submitted. The minutes from the January 22 meeting will be uploaded by Cassie onto the Booster site.

President’s Remarks:  At the January meeting Karen raised a question in regards to band parent, Julie Denker and the status of her refund from the 2017 Disney trip. Jack checked his records and on 2/1/18 called Julie Denker, her name was not on the list from Bob Rogers travel. Julie stated she meant to remind Jack, but had forgotten. Jack emailed Karen that day to ask Karen to send a check to Julie.

On Febuary 12, Mr Fantone informed Jack that an unexpected game was scheduled for 2/28. Jack and Kristi spoke with Pam Hobart and Mr Fantone regarding TAB working the concession stand that date. TAB will bring their own popcorn maker, food, candy and drinks. Any profit that day will belong to TAB.

On Saturday, 2/7/18 the band’s popcorn machine caught fire at the high school concession stand. Ileana’s son quickly reacted to help put the fire out. Our losses include the machine, popcorn and some food that was out. The loss total would have been much higher had Anthony not reacted so quickly. Jack proposes presenting Anthony with a public thank you and monetary gift of $100.  All present were in favor, motion approved. Anthony Cardaman will receive a public thank you and check for $100 from the Band Boosters.

Jack stated there was a lot of frustration from Lisa Georges in regards to the email volleys for the concert programs, going forward Lisa will only send the program to Mr Bonitz for proof reading. Lisa will attend a future executive meeting to discuss program guidelines to ensure advertising is correct. There will be written guidelines on how the programs should be formatted. The final proof will only be sent to a selected few board members for further proof reading.

Directors Report:

Mr Resnick: Report given by Mr Bonitz. The 5th grade class is now working in their class method books. They have also received their 3 songs for the spring concert. The junior high has 42 entries scheduled for solo and ensemble. Last year there were 30 entries. There are 110 in the 7th/8th grade bands. The band is ready for this week’s concert. The RBC jazz band will be March 19. There is a RBC 7th/8th grade band concert on May 7th at 6:30, due to scheduling issues, there will be an orchestra performance the same day, immediately following at 7pm.

Mr Bonitz: The concert is this Wednesday at 7pm, report time is 6:15pm. The students will be performing the 3 songs on Wednesday that they will perform for Districts. Districts are this Friday at the Medina Performing Arts center. THS is scheduled to perform at 7:45pm. The students would love to see friendly faces if parents are able to make it to Medina. The ETA back to Twinsburg is 10:30pm.

Mr Bonitz is trying to add staff to the band program which will provide more individualized attention to the students and will also enable the school to have two concert bands. Students would need to audition for the band; this will allow students to better play to their ability. The jazz band will be playing on Tuesday, 2/27 during dinner for the black history club showcase. The report time is 6:30pm.

On Tuesday. April 17th, the band will have a concert to preview the 3 new pieces that will be played at states (contingent on Friday’s score at districts).

Band Council Report:  Report given by Jaina Gedeon. Solo and ensemble went well. It is the biggest turn out Jaina has seen. Students earned 30 superior ratings and 18 excellent ratings. Due to the large number of performances, many students were performing at the same time. Amore went well and it was a nice way to showcase the student’s hard work. March 13th is the jazz concert night; some great songs have been selected. And there will be new songs to work on for states. There are students working on music outside of school, CYO, CYWS. More are auditioning. Jack requests the list from Jaina of what kids are involved in so we can acknowledge their hard work.

Committee Reports:

Treasurer’s report: Report given by Karen Wilson.  A profit/loss statement was distributed to attendees. The final Tiger card and Gionino statements are reflected as those have been closed out. All bills are current with the exception of what Mr Bonitz turned in this evening. The uniforms are paid for and are expected in April. Jack requests the 50/50 bucket and a cash box for the concert this week. Karen has been keeping 3 boxes for concessions and 1 box for spirit wear. She has closed down 1 concession stand box.

Volunteers: Ileana: If we are working the concession stands on Saturday she will be reaching out for volunteers.

Concessions: Kristi and Cindy: They were able to use the left over product from football season for the basketball concessions, but they did have to reorder some product. Kristi will contact 7Up/Snapple to discuss returning the left over product this week. Jack proposed offering Saturday’s game (contingent on Wednesday’s win) to TAB. Everyone is in agreement we will offer Saturday to TAB, Jack will contact Pam tonight. Cindy asked Jack if we can get an estimate for a replacement popcorn machine. Jack will contact Kathy Powers regarding the insurance.

Fundraising:  Christine and Colleen: That’s Amore successfully earned money. The profit was $2097. They are working on the fundraising dates for the 2018/19 school year. Dates must be submitted to the school board by April. The first fundraiser will be the Rock the park event July 2nd  (raindate July 9th) . Tiger cards were a little rocky this past year due to printing issues, ideally the information about the cards will be presented at the picnic and then given to the students the first week of band camp. There will be some new vendors on the cards, and they are working on some new incentives.

The Twins Day café (8/4/18) just needs a couple of student volunteers. Tag Day will be August 11th. Gionino’s cards will (tentatively) be in the month of October, that fundraiser is 100% profit. Hoping for 4 Dine out events, tentatively scheduling Original Steak & Hoagie for 11/18/18, Chipotle for 12/11/18, Handels Ice Cream in April, and the last dine out date/location is open for suggestions. That’s Amore event possibly scheduled for 2/23/19. This will be a trip year, so this event may need to be moved back on site, simplified and kept in consideration to planning/scheduling conflicts. The Amazon smile fundraiser is still going on. They would like to present the fundraising calendar and the Tiger cards to students and parents at the picnic. Hopefully the tiger cards will be started the first full week of band camp. The initial incentives will coordinate with the end of band camp, but the tiger cards will not be due until Aug 31, giving time for students to approach teachers, as THS teachers lamented that they were not approached. The TBB sponsorship drive will be placed on the fundraising calendar to allow for better advertising. Tentatively the drive will go from the first day of school until the end of September. Possible future fundraising ideas include Breakfast with a holiday character, football squares, BBQ/pig roast, raffle calendar, Shutterfly/digital photo books.

Publicist: Cassie: Cassie is working on cleaning up the website. She is still posting band information to multiple sites throughout the week.

Uniform Report: Report read by Jane Weiss for Michelle Reed. Michelle plans to chaperone as a BUM for OMEA this Friday. There will be a BUM workday on March 15th during 2nd and 3rd block. The task is mainly mending collars on about 10 drill dresses. The dresses are coming detached in the back and need reinforcing. She will be contacting some BUM volunteers but would love additional help. The new marching uniforms should arrive the end of April/beginning of May.  Jane commented that the GE group has emails that go out regularly to all the parents, and they are very effective at communicating information and expectations.

Spirit Wear Report: Carie:  Carie said she is meeting with RDP, the spirit wear sale will run through the end of band camp. In August there will be sales for the younger students. Carie would like the juniors to design their shirts for senior year, hopefully designs will be done by the end of March. Carie is planning a holiday spirit wear sale for the month of November. Cassie gave Carie contact information for the canvas bags. Carie is requesting a committee be implemented for spirit wear. She will not be at Wednesday’s concert. She is asking if youth sizes should be ordered for the May concert for the 5th graders. After discussion, youth sizes will not be ordered at this time.

Old Business: None stated.

New Business:  Jack will send the dates for the 2018/19 booster meeting schedule tomorrow to the board of education; the 2018/19 performance dates and fundraising dates will also be submitted.  Per conversation about possible dates, Mr Bonitz said the Band Picnic will most likely be July 24th. July 25 will be the meeting with student leaders; July 26 will be freshman rehearsal, and July 27th full rehearsal. The first full week of band camp begins July 30.

Adjourn: Call for a motion to adjourn was made by Jack Rapkin. Motion to accept by Susie Bird, 2nd by Cassie Via. The meeting was adjourned at 7:14pm.
