Cholesterol
You've probably heard the words "good" and "bad" used to describe cholesterol. Knowing the difference and how to get the most out of your cholesterol levels is important in keeping your heart healthy. The nicknames "good" and "bad" cholesterol relate to risk factors for heart disease.
HDL:
High levels of HDL, or "good" cholesterol, are linked to lower heart disease risk.
LDL
: High levels of LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, are associated with higher heart disease risk. Remember, keep you HDL levels High and your LDL levels Low.
While neither HDL nor LDL cholesterol are found in food, your choices do influence LDL levels. Eating less saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol in your diet will help lower your LDL levels. Physical activity will also help lower your LDL and keep your HDL high.
