What can I do at home to help?
Nightly reading:
Read every night with your child. Here are some ways to mix it up a bit:
Choral reading
: Reading the same words at the same pace as your child. Your child should be pointing to the words as you both are reading.
Echo reading
: You read a sentence, stop, and have your child repeat what you read with the same expression, and pointing to each word.
Take Turns
: You read a sentence, and your child reads the next sentence.
Silent Reading
: Encourage your child to read silently for 5 minutes. At the end of 5 minutes, sit down and reread the material together. Ask him/her which words they missed when they read it alone.
